Centre of Excellence in Literacy Education in Nigeria

The lack of access to basic literacy education and skills development has greatly affected peoples’ potential to contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of the country. This problem thereby affects the accelerated development of the country and deprived people inclusive education opportunities most notably, those geographically disadvantaged. I strongly believe that the world’s illiteracy problems are significant, and require the top minds to solve them, thus; the proposed “Centre of Excellence in Literacy Education (Centre for Vocational Skills Development). The proposed Centre of Excellence in Literacy Education is an effort from Prince Technology and Community Development Foundation (a registered NGO in Nigeria) to construct a world-class centre for Business, Entrepreneurship, Science, Technological, and Literacy Advancements. The centre will empower youth, women, artisans, junior/secondary school students, undergraduates, science scholars, and small business owners in Nigeria to think beyond the current scope and leverage their talents to advance literacy education in Nigeria and better the world around them.

STRATEGIES:

The “Centre of Excellence in Literacy Education (Centre for Vocational Skills Development is one of the programmes created by Prince Technology and Community Development Foundationprimarily concerned with bequeathing productive, functional and marketable skills to youth, women, artisans and small business owners in the South-East Nigeria. These skills acquisition intervention, introduced as a novel approach in combating mass unemployment and eradicating illiteracy has remained a veritable tool since over a decade now. The programme involves the use of our skills acquisition training centre(s) as well as informal sector operators such as master crafts-men and women as training outlets for Nigerians.

Now we are set to take our idea to the next level “Centre of Excellence in Literacy Education” – to make a lasting contribution and impact in the lives of those we serve, by providing the platform and a fertile environment for Nigerians to cross-fertilize with our term of experts/specialists who have shown usual accomplishments and exceptional courage in advancing literacy in Nigeria.

I joined the program in a bid to remind local communities and the international community of the importance of literacy for individual communities and societies, and the need for intensified efforts toward more literate societies. Literacy has been proven to lift people out of poverty.
