AUTOMATIC HOME APPLIANCES CONTROL SYSTEM USING VOICE COMMAND OR MOBILE APPLICATION

Invented by Engr. Prince Nwankwo (The winner of the Inventors Award of the Year 2022 in Nigeria)

A. Project Overview: Manual operation of electrical and electronic devices has long been an issue, not only in terms of convenience but also safety. Many individuals are subjected to electric shocks when they attempt to switch appliances on or off, primarily due to leakage currents from switches and sockets. This is particularly a significant problem for individuals with mobility problems (physically challenged).

As a remedy for this issue, the Automatic Home Appliances Control System Using Voice Command or Mobile Application is a novel, secure, and convenient system. The system has the ability to control various household and industrial appliances wirelessly using either voice command or a mobile application, providing users with a more convenient and secure method of controlling their devices.

B. Innovation Description: Developed by Engr. Prince Nwankwo, this system allows one to control an array of appliances without touching them. By voice or via mobile application, one can just turn appliances on or off, anywhere within a 10-meter radius (approximately 33 feet). The system is compatible with a broad spectrum of devices, including but not limited to:

  • Television
  • Decoder
  • Refrigerator
  • Electric bulbs
  • Air-conditioner
  • Home theatre
  • CD/DVD player
  • Water pumping machine
  • Industrial machines
  • And more.

By using the corresponding voice commands (e.g., “Bulb on,” “Fridge on,” “Television off,” “Pumping machine on”), users can manage their home appliances with ease. The alternative control method involves tapping on a simple and intuitive app interface that also enables device operation.

C. Key Features:

  • Voice Command Integration: Users can issue commands like “Turn on the TV,” “Switch off the fridge,” or “Activate the air-conditioner” using a voice-activated mobile app.
  • Mobile App Control: Provides an intuitive interface to control various devices remotely.
  • Wireless Operation: Effective within a range of up to 10 meters (33 feet).
  • Universal Appliance Compatibility: Works with a wide variety of home, industrial, and electronic devices.
  • Safety Enhancement: Reduces the risk of electric shocks by eliminating the need to manually operate switches.
  • Accessibility Focused: Designed to assist the elderly and physically challenged, enabling effortless control of appliances without physical exertion.

E. Impact and Future Prospects:

This new system aims to simplify home and industrial appliance control and improve safety. Its simplicity provides an answer to the issues of aged individuals, the disabled, and anyone who wants to have a more intelligent, efficient way of controlling their appliances. By leveraging state-of-the-art voice recognition and mobile technology, this system promotes greater independence and comfort for individuals, especially those with mobility disabilities. As one of the components of the vision of the Prince Technology and Community Development Foundation towards accessible, technology-driven solutions, this project establishes the groundwork towards a future in which technology becomes an enabler for everyone independent of physical disability.

The project has great potential for expansion through integration with AI, compatibility with other smart home networks, and mass commercialization. It is well-suited for deployment in residences, workplaces, and care facilities, with scaling possibility in disadvantaged communities through public-private partnerships. The system can be customized to support different languages, making it more inclusive and accessible to a wider range of users.
