ENERGY SOLUTIONS TO RURAL OFF-GRID DWELLERS ACROSS AFRICA

“The climate is changing, the globe is warming, icebergs melting, the earth is cracking, the sun is scorching, the ozone layer is depleting, all because of the anthropogenic green house gas emission into the atmosphere” – Prince Nwankwo.

Sunlight Striking Earth’s Surface in Just One Hour Delivers Enough Energy to Power the World Economy for an Entire Year!

IF NOT US, WHO? IF NOT NOW, WHEN?

CONCEPT NOTE: RURAL ENERGY DISTRIBUTION PROJECT

Introduction: Energy is the lifeblood of the modern world and a paramount importance for the modern industrialized economy, yet over 600 million people – 70% of the population in sub-Saharan Africa live without electricity. Rural Energy Distribution Project is a social enterprise from Prince Tech Global Ventures Ltd (in partnership with Prince Technology and Community Development Foundation) geared towards providing up to 30KWatts centralized Solar Mini-Grid Solution to rural communities and up to 300Watts standalone solar solution for small business and single home in a typical rural community. Revenue collection through an automated prepaid metering model for rural communities and Pay-As-you-Go model for small business and single home are ensuring less than US$6 monthly investment payback for rural dwellers and 36 months investment payback model for small business and single home in a typical rural community.

Solutions that we are implementing with our new venture:

With 75% of the world’s poorest countries located in Africa, 10 countries with the highest proportion of residents living in extreme poverty all in sub-Saharan Africa, over 600 million people in the region without access to electricity, over 60% of Nigerians having little or no access to Grid electricity, and over 10 people dying weekly in our country (Nigeria) as a result of fumes from the over 60 million generators with annual spending of over N1.6 trillion; it became imperative to deploy sustainable and innovative energy solution(s) in order to achieve positive contribution in the development and economic enhancement of rural communities in Nigeria (Africa).

But the questions are; if not us! Who? And if not now! When?

Our Rural Energy Distribution Project is providing up to 30KWatts centralized Solar Mini-Grid Solution to rural communities and up to 300Watts standalone solar solution for small business and single home in a typical rural community. We are using a micro-scaled renewable energy system to effectively meet the energy needs of remote settlements and businesses at the most economic cost to suit their income levels; while generating good returns to investors and scaling the intervention beyond boarders to impact many communities in Africa without or limited access to electricity. Our intervention is providing opportunities for rural communities to avoid using inefficient and unreliable sources of energy such as kerosene, candle, wood and more directly to renewable energy such as affordable, cheaper, and cleaner solar lamps to enhance economic growth, improve the quality of lives and standard of living of rural dwellers – to fuel African innovative Eco-system.

In Nigeria; most households and businesses have resorted to “private fossil fuel generating sets” as their only/main source of energy. This has resulted to economic, social and environmental problems, and it is taking its toll in various circle of the economy.

Economically: Service and product providers are forced to charge higher to meet the high cost of production, resulting to over 19% increase in the cost of goods and services.

Socially: It has led to academic failure, inadequate water supply, and unavailability of power supply for rural dwellers to charge their mobile phones for effective networking and business transaction.

Environmentally: Fossil fuel is the major source of anthropogenic green house gas emission responsible for global warming, acid rain, climate change and ozone layer depletion.

The direct link between the energy consumption and the economic output of Nigeria makes it critical that we fix our power issues. Each day we ignore this energy crisis, we elongate our ability to catch up with the rest of the world. Tasks like growing a business, healthy lifestyles, and day to day societal activities become painstaking when access to electricity is a concern. Africa currently represents almost 15 per cent of the world’s population and unfortunately produces less than 3.6 per cent of the world’s economic output. We cannot depend on fossil fuel generators as our primary energy source or the energy source of our future. For every year that we wait, for every hour that we stall fixing our energy crisis, we set the country on a course that will be irreversible.

img-20161003-wa0037Most mega manufacturing industries in Nigeria have closed or are operating far below production capacity, small and medium scale entrepreneurship which is one of the major ingredients to stimulate wide spread growth in the economy, is being choked by lack of affordable power supply. The implication on the economy cannot be over exaggerated as it is taking its toll in various circle of the economy. Service and product providers are forced to charge higher to meet the high cost of production. This leads to gradual loss of patronage resulting, in multiple loss and eventual closure of business. The end product is massive job losses and hardship in the country. Nigerian manufacturers, small scale businesses and families spend an average of N3.5 trillion yearly to power their generating sets with diesel and petrol due to unstable supply of electricity.  Statistics from the  Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) showed that it spends about N800 billion to power its industrial generating sets to remain afloat, while other small scale private businesses, banks and traders in various markets across the country spend over N2 trillion fueling their  generators to have power. In the banking sector, each branch spends over N2 million on diesels in a month.

Our intervention is addressing the economic, social & environmental needs of those we serve:

– Economic: Our intervention is enabling small business owners to run on 100% solar solution, while saving an average of US$8 daily, spent on fossil fuel to power their businesses.

– Social: Our intervention is enabling rural communities to; pump water, read at night with clean energy, charge their mobile phones; instead of using other unsustainable energy sources like; fossil fuel generating set, candle, etc.

– Environmental: Our intervention is ensuring the elimination of the over 60 million generators in Nigeria, with annual spending of over N1.6 trillion – responsible for the anthropogenic green house gas emission into the atmosphere.

Prince Tech Global Ventures LTD (company) and Prince Technology and Community Development Foundation (NGO) were inspired by the idea of working with local stakeholders to  advance Clean Energy access to over 600 million people leaving in Africa without access to electricity.

“The future belongs to us, because we have taken charge of it. We are the leaders of today, not the leaders of tomorrow. We have the vitality, we have the enthusiasm, we have the ability, and we have the resourcefulness to tackle power challenge in Africa, and add smiles on the faces of the people who have suffered for so long as a result of unavailability of power supply” – Prince Nwankwo.
